Audiological Testing

CAE- Complete audiologic evaluation

Routine hearing test involving pure tone, speech discrimination and tympanometry. The purpose is to evaluate the level of hearing present in each ear. Should be performed annually after 40 years old or if any type of auditory pathology is suspected.

BSER- Brainstem Evoked Response

Electrophysiological evaluation of the auditory system from the ear to the brain looking for blockages along the pathway. It uses electrodes attached to the head to record information in response to sounds presented during testing.

ENG- Electronystagmography

Electrophysiological evaluation of the vestibular system in the ear and the brain. The test consists of three sections which evaluate the visual, positional and vestibular portions of the balance system. This test looks for disorders within the peripheral vestibular system.

VEP- Visual Evoked Potential

Electrophysiological evaluation of the visual system from the eye to the brain looking for blockages along the pathway in relation to the vestibular system. It specifically is looking for neural damage to the visual pathway as in demyelinating diseases.

Dynamic Posturography

A modified test of postural stability and range of motion. It evaluates the vestibular and somatosensory/proprioceptive systems by making the patient stand and maintain balance on firm and soft surfaces.

OAE – Otoacoustic Emissions

An electrophysiologic test of the Outer Hair Cells in the Inner Ear. It determines whether the Outer hair cells are functioning normally to allow for auditory perception. IT IS NOT A TEST OF HEARING; IT IS A TEST OF THE HAIR CELL FUNCTION.

Tinnitus Evaluation

Suggested for patients who present with moderate or severe tinnitus. Patient is evaluated to determine candidacy of a tinnitus masker. If hearing loss is present hearing aids may be suggested.
